As of January 1, 2011, yard waste cannot be disposed of in any Delaware landfill. Yard Waste must be separated from trash and taken to an approved yard waste collection or composting facility.
DNREC's definition of yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, prunings, garden materials, brush, shrubs, Christmas trees, and tree limbs up to 4" in diameter.
Blue Hen Disposal takes yard waste to the only DNREC approved composting facility in Sussex County, Blue Hen Organics, located in Frankford, Delaware. At Blue Hen Organics, yard waste is ground, blended with food waste, and composted. The finished compost is used in agricultural and landscaping applications all over the Delmarva Peninsula.
